রাজস্থান বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে অর্থনীতিতে স্নাতক নেওয়ার পরে তিনি পুলিশ অফিসার হিসাবে তার কর্মজীবন চালিয়েছিলেন। তিনি ১৯৮০ সালে ভারতীয় পুলিশ সার্ভিসে যোগ দিয়েছিলেন এবং একমাত্র মহিলা কর্মকর্তা ছিলেন। ১৯৮৯ সালে তিনি ইউনিভার্সিটি অফ সাউদার্ন ক্যালিফোর্নিয়া থেকে অপরাধবিদ্যায় মাস্টার অফ সায়েন্স সম্পন্ন করেন। ১৯৯৫ সালে তিনি রাষ্ট্রপতি পদক লাভ করেন।^[২] ২০১৪ সালের মে মাসে, তিনি অতিরিক্ত পরিচালক হিসাবে সিবিআইতে যোগ দেন এবং ভারতের প্রথম মহিলা কর্মকর্তা যিনি কেন্দ্রীয় তদন্ত ব্যুরোতে অতিরিক্ত পরিচালক হিসাবে অন্তর্ভুক্ত হন। অবৈধ নিয়োগ হিসেবে বিবেচনা করে সুপ্রিম কোর্ট তার নিয়োগকে আইনগতভাবে চ্যালেঞ্জ জানায় এবং সুপ্রিম কোর্ট অর্চনার নিয়োগের বিরুদ্ধে রায় দেয়। তামিলনাড়ু সরকার তাকে ডিজিপি পদ থেকে বরখাস্ত করে।^[৩] ২০১৬ সালের ৩ ফেব্রুয়ারি তিনি সশস্ত্র সীমা বালের মহাপরিচালক হিসেবে নিযুক্ত হন এবং তিনিই প্রথম মহিলা পুলিশ কর্মকর্তা যিনি আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে আধাসামরিক বাহিনীর নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার জন্য নিযুক্ত হন। জুলাই, ২০১৮ সালে অর্চনার পরিবর্তে রজনী কান্ত মিশ্রকে সশস্ত্র সীমা বল বিভাগের নতুন মহাপরিচালক হিসেবে নিযুক্ত করা হয়। অর্চনা ২০১৮ সালে আইপিএস থেকে অবসর নেন।^[৪]^[৫]^[৬]^[৭] ^[৮]^[৯]^[১০]^[১১]^[১২]^[১৩]^[১৪]
